A customer who fell behind on her rent payments when she couldn’t work due to ill health has turned things around, with support from believe housing.
The woman’s bad luck started in late 2020, when she was working two factory jobs.
She had to take time off work after becoming unwell and, when her agency contract ended, she lost both jobs.
“I couldn’t get another job for a long time after the agency let me go, because I knew I’d need more time off.
“I hadn’t been to see a doctor in a good ten years, but I ended up with an infection and needing an operation, so I had to concentrate on my health,” she said.
“After being a tenant for 18 years, and even paying an extra £100 rent when I could afford it, I found myself in arrears for the first time. I’d never had any problems until I lost that job and it felt awful.
“When believe housing rang me about it, I said I was struggling, and I was absolutely amazed by the help I got.”
Money and employability experts at believe housing contacted The Sawyer Trust, which helps women over 50 who are in need because of financial hardship, sickness or poor health, and the charity was able to clear her arrears.
With support from believe housing, along with Reed in Partnership and Horden Hub House, the customer had a renewed energy when applying for jobs.
“I got a job in a shop at Dalton Park, 12 hours a week but I’m doing extra hours when I can. I’ve never worked in retail before but I’m learning every day and loving it.
“I’m even managing to get in credit with my rent,” she said.
“It hasn’t been easy, I had more downs than ups for a while, but the brilliant support I’ve had has really helped get me here.
“I feel so much better about everything.”
