County Durham is a step closer to being named UK City of Culture 2025 after making the final shortlist of just four locations still in the running for the prestigious title.
Securing UK City of Culture 2025 status could create thousands of jobs, boost the county’s creative and visitor economies by millions of pounds, empower residents and help to improve community wellbeing.
Following the announcement from The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, Durham County Council, Durham University and Culture Durham – the partners spearheading the Durham 2025 campaign – thanked the many individuals, businesses and organisations that have supported the bid.
believe housing is a proud supporter of the campaign.
Chief Executive Bill Fullen said: “Making the shortlist of four is incredible news for County Durham as it not only recognises what the city and county of Durham already have to offer, but also the area’s huge potential and ambition.
“believe housing proudly supports cultural initiatives such as Lumiere, ensuring local communities get to create installations, because we believe in the power of culture to inspire individuals, unite communities, break down barriers and transform lives.
“UK City of Culture 2025 status would bring an incredible programme of events, social and economic benefits to the county and help lift up people and communities who need and deserve this opportunity.
“We continue to support the Durham 2025 campaign and hope the entire region gets behind it.”
