first look at new homes proposed for Durham
Stunning images have been unveiled showing how more than 100 new homes proposed for a County Durham community could look.
An unplanned change of address proved to be just the right move for Rita Murphy.
When Rita was told her home in Brandon, County Durham, was no longer fit for purpose and could be demolished she felt shocked and scared.
But landlord believe housing helped her move into a new home … and she couldn’t be happier with the outcome.
“It was a bit scary because I had good friends and neighbours and the last thing I wanted was to lose them and start all over again,” she explains.
“Despite the shock, I could see the problems with the house and why demolition made sense.
“believe housing were amazing, they couldn’t have done more to make it as easy as possible.
“With their support, I moved into a new home in Brandon and my old next-door neighbour, who I was worried about leaving, is just across the road from me.
“I absolutely love my new house.
“It looks and feels much more spacious and homely.
“Best of all, the new neighbours are terrific. A few of us are already very close, we enjoy day trips together, bingo, and we’re booking a week on holiday in Torquay.
“I really couldn’t be happier here.”
Rita used to live in Silver Courts.
Following a review of the bungalows in Silver Courts and Vicarage Flats, and consultation with customers, a decision was made to demolish those properties.
Built in the 1950s, they no longer meet the needs they were originally designed for.
Customers in those properties have been supported with relocation and demolition will start soon.
The scheme is part of a wider regeneration masterplan for Brandon, which is being developed by believe housing, in consultation with residents.
It will improve the quality, energy efficiency and mix of housing available and enhance open spaces and facilities.
